Sermon Application Questions - 5/16/10 Who Is He and What Did He Do? - Matthew 16:13-23 1. After Peter's brilliant statement in verse 16, Jesus said to him, "flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven." How did God reveal to you that Jesus is "the Christ, the Son of the living God"? How did he bring that about in your life? What was that like in your experience? (Don't be overly concerned if you can't immediately answer these questions. Most of us haven't thought of our conversion in these terms. Every person who has been saved was saved with a limited understanding of what was really happening. It will take a lifetime, and then some, for us to grasp the depth and wonder of the miracle of salvation.) 2. What is God using now to increase your understanding of who Christ is? How specifically is your understanding of Christ increasing? 3. How does understanding the "gates of Hades" as "the gates of death" affect your understanding of and confidence in the commitment of Christ to build his church? How is this understanding even better than the traditional "romantic" understanding of the phrase "and the gates of hell will not prevail against it"? 4. Jesus describes his suffering and death as "the things of God" (v. 23). How does that affect your understanding of the passion of Christ? What response does that evoke in your heart toward God the Father? Toward Jesus? |
